  kick the bucket : 죽다 

[ 사전 정의 ]

Phrase used to say someone is dead or has deceased. Term is derived from when suicides were common by a person preparing to hang themself, and used a bucket to stand on, and then kicked the bucket when suicide was desired.

누군가가 죽었다는 것을 말하기 위해 사용되는 어구이다. 이 용어는 목을 메어 자살을 준비할때 양동이에 올라서서 차버린후 죽게되는 상황에서 유래한 용어이다.

­ 그 노인은 땅 속에 묻힌 보물의 존재를 알고 있었는데 아무에게도 그 위치에 대해  말하지 않고 죽었다.

유 래 :

kick the bucket은 '죽다, 자살하다'는 뜻이다. 옛날에 많이 사용된 자살 방법 중의 하나는 높은 곳에 밧줄을 매단 뒤 양동이 위에 올라가 목에 밧줄을 걸고 나서 양동이를 발로 걷어차는 것이었다. 이러한 자살법에서 유래된 표현이다.

1) 돼지를 잡을 때 돼지의 목에 줄을 건 뒤 대 들보에 줄을 매달아 질식사시키는 방법을 썼는데 이때 돼지가 발버둥치면서 발로 대들보를 찬 데서 비롯된 말이라는 설도 있다. bucket은 옛날에는 대들보(beam)라는 뜻으로도 쓰였다.

kick the bucket에서 유래된 말로 bucket list(버킷리스트)가 있다. 죽기 전에 하고 싶은 일의 목록을 뜻한다. 암에 걸려 6개월 시한부 선고를 받은 두 노인이 우연히 병원 중환자실에서 만나 각자의 소망 리스트를 실행에 옮기는 내용의 할리우드 영화 〈버킷리스트(The Bucket List)〉(2007)가 흥행에 성공하면서 일반에게 유행하게 되었다.
